Crystavia began in 2015 when a small team of travel professionals recognised an opportunity to approach winter tourism differently. Rather than following conventional patterns of crowded ski resorts and rushed itineraries, we sought to create programmes that revealed winter's quieter dimensions.

The founding vision centred on three winter destinations that offered distinct perspectives: Alaska's wilderness ecosystems, Romania's preserved medieval culture, and Bhutan's living Buddhist traditions. Each location presented winter not as an obstacle to overcome but as a season that enhanced certain experiences.

Our early programmes focused on working with local guides who understood their regions intimately. In Alaska, we partnered with naturalists who tracked animal movements through winter months. In Romania, we connected with historians familiar with Transylvanian heritage. In Bhutan, we collaborated with cultural interpreters who could contextualise winter festivals.

Over the past decade, this foundation has remained constant while our understanding has deepened. We have learned which accommodations provide genuine comfort in winter conditions, which timing produces optimal wildlife viewing, and which local partnerships create the most rewarding cultural exchanges.
